How to Promote without Going Broke
As an artist in today's struggling economic times, I can understand why many refer to themselves as 'Starving Artists.' It is difficult to make or increase sales of your artwork when it is not among the consumable products so many need and have to budget for. And the thought of advertising costs to promote your website or works is almost enough to make you reconsider your chosen field altogether! But, with a little more elbow grease and time and a LOT less money, you can safely ride the recession tide and keep your business afloat. Remember when you were first starting out and you could not wait to tell the world about your new life plan? Well, it was those little things that you did in the beginning that can keep you going now! *Word of Mouth - Tell everyone and anyone about your artwork, the type of graphic services that you provide, what your latest illustration included...they will in turn tell others and may refer you to someone who is in need of your talent. *Business cards - I know that this is a given, but are you using them in EVERY way possible? Pin one to your local community bulletin board, leave one with your tip at resteraunts, include one in correspondance, ask a fellow artist( supplier, baker, carpenter) to swap a stack of cards and help to promote each other! *Sign up for with an online freelance service - Guru has an excellent one that will get your resume, work and website information infront of millions and will help you build your business. *Be willing to take on ANY job that pertains to art in some way - no job is too small or pay too little when it means your work is placed in front of future clients. *Contact local gift shops, galleries, etc IN PERSON. - a personal appearance not only adds an emotional connection between the shop owner/ director and your work, but shows a real invested interest between you, your work and your want to be a part of their world. *Participate in local charity functions and auctions. - A GREAT way to help others in need AND bring your work as a local artist into the public eye! All these things are FREE to reletivity cheap and will go a LONG way to keeping your work going in difficult times.

Living a tragic life and dying prematurely has always been a surefire way to pique the interest of the art market.

This is a great little article. You can really tell you have a lot of gumption and persistence. It really shines through when you talk about how no job is small. You point out that taking them can put your work in front of a future client. Well done.
